Founded in 2002, Sarasota Military Academy (SMA) is a nonprofit, tuition-free, public charter school with two unique campuses offering Quality Academics, Character and Leadership Development to students in grades 6-12.
Sarasota Military Academy is open to any student who resides in the Sarasota County (Florida) School District, and the Manatee and Charlotte County School Districts. Students will be considered for admission without regard to race, religion, gender, or national or ethnic origin.
Learning at SMA is Transformative.
To thrive in our rapidly changing world requires an approach to teaching and learning that is founded in a learner-centered approach to facilitate the development of agency within our young people. As students navigate and interact within a global environment through technology, their greatest assets will be to learn how to learn and become adaptable to new experiences they will face now and in the future.
What is a Learner-Centered Approach?
A shift from a teacher-centered to a learner-centered approach is imperative to empower our young people to succeed into today’s world. Each individual child can develop the creative confidence to advocate for themselves with the goal of taking ownership of their learning. All learners are unique and the goal for 21st century education is to design learning experiences that provide opportunities for the whole child to develop.
A Growing Demand for Social and Emotional Skills
Along with developing content knowledge and skills, the future demands individuals who are able to regulate their emotions and behavior, collaborate with others, build relationships and communicate effectively. While technological innovations continue to change all facets of how we live and work, SMA understands that the social and emotional needs of our diverse learners are at the heart of what we do.
