Age 9-12
Wilmington, DE

Delaware Military Academy is a public high school. It is open to all applicants who are residents of Delaware, without regard to race, religion, age, sex, national origin or disability.  What makes it different is that it is also a charter specialty school. There are no specified admission requirements. However, students apply for acceptance and are interviewed, just as they would be when they wish to enter a private military school.

All students attending the Delaware Military Academy are called cadets. Not only are there regular instructors, many of them also have a past military background. Some teachers are retired from the military. Seven of them are Naval Science Instructors who are also in charge of leading all the military programs in the school.

Military Education

At Delaware Military Academy, most of the language used is taken directly from the military. The cafeteria is known as the mess hall and the gymnasium is referred to as the drill deck. Cadets are organized into population segments. They have titles like regiments, battalions, platoons, squads and companies, according to how long they have been at the school and the coursework they have successfully completed. They are given ranks such as leaders and commanders, which are earned.

Class size features a student to teacher ratio of about 22:1. This specialized academy has received recognition from the United States Navy and from the State of Delaware for its excellent academic programs and for student achievements. Students regularly test highly on standardized tests and they go through rigorous and challenging academic coursework.

Physical Education And Sports Are Emphasized

Delaware Military Academy features a variety of athletic opportunities designed to appeal to all students. Physical education is an important part of the curriculum, since being in top physical shape helps students to feel and perform better. Students can choose from sports like football, basketball, golf, baseball, wrestling, volleyball, soccer, ice hockey, lacrosse, swimming and softball. The school was recognized in 2012 for its excellent hockey team and program. The hockey team has earned several trophies and championship titles.

The school is also a member of the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association. Athletic participation is highly encouraged and helps cadets to be more well-rounded in their educational experience.

The Academy Keeps Cadet’s Focus On Core Values
